Round-up of the local hockey action – Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd March.

Team Bath Buccaneers women’s 1st XI will travel to Slough 1st XI on Saturday 28th March with the England Hockey Women’s Conference West title at stake

Top spot in England Hockey Women’s Conference West is up for grabs as the final round of matches looms – and Team Bath Buccaneers’ women’s 1st XI are in the box seat for glory.

The Buccs are top of the table, two points clear of second-placed Cardiff & Met 1st XI and with a better goal-difference than the Welsh team.

Team Bath recorded their 12th win of the campaign – the highest total in the section – when they thumped Cheltenham-based visitors Lansdown 1st XI 4-1 on Saturday 21st March.

Charlotte Barr gave the hosts a 13th-minute lead, only for Charlotte McShane to level matters from a penalty corner 10 minutes later.

A goal from a penalty corner by Tabitha Tinniswood in the 31st minute restored the Buccaneers’ advantage.

Maria Gali and Sophie Shield – the latter from a penalty corner – sealed the victory by scoring in the 56th and 69th minutes respectively.

A trip to basement outfit Slough 1st XI awaits Team Bath on Saturday 28th March, when Cardiff & Met go to fourth-placed Lansdown.

Team Bath men’s 1st XI will go into their final match of the England Hockey Men’s Conference West programme with a chance of a top-three finish.

The Buccs are in fourth spot, a point behind third-placed Chichester 1st XI who have a much better goal-difference.

Team Bath will visit Exeter-based bottom side Isca 1st XI on Sunday 29th March, when Chichester travel to mid-table Cardiff & Met 2nd XI.

Two goals from Ed Whitworth and an Alex Butterfield strike from a penalty corner handed the Buccaneers a 3-1 home win over University of Bristol 1st XI on Sunday 22nd March.

The visitors reduced the arrears to 2-1 thanks to Iziah Duck’s penalty corner on the hour. But Whitworth’s second goal, five minutes later, killed off their challenge.

Table-toppers City of Bath men’s 1st XI can win the West Hockey West Men’s Division 2 East title on Saturday 28th March, when they entertain Newent 1st XI.

With three games to go, the Somerset side hold an eight-point lead over second-placed Stroud 1st XI, the only team who can catch them.

The momentum is definitely with City of Bath, who recorded their 18th win from 19 league fixtures when they triumphed 4-2 in a key tie at Stroud on Saturday 21st March.

On target for the victors were James Kellock (penalty corner), Ben Kirby Woollett, Rhys Jones (penalty corner) and Harry Kellock.
