A review of a decision not to prosecute anyone after the death of three soldiers, one of them from Bath, on a military training exercise in 2013 was correct, it’s been announced.
L/Cpl Craig Roberts, 24, of Penrhyn Bay, Conwy, and L/Cpl Edward Maher, 31, died on 13th July 2013 during a 40-mile hike as part of a four-week trial for the Territorial Army’s SAS reservists.
Cpl James Dunsby, from Bath, died later in hospital.
Temperatures on the day reached 29.5ºc and caused all three soldiers to collapse.
It was later found that the heat had caused ‘multiple organ failure’ which caused Cpl James Dunsby to die two weeks later.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) decided in July 2014 that it wouldn’t be bringing any gross negligence manslaughter charges over the deaths.
The CPS has now reviewed the decision under the Victims’ Right to Review scheme and concluded it was correct.
An inquest, which was put on hold until the review decision was made, is now expected to take place.
