One of Bath’s most iconic landmarks, Pulteney Bridge in the city centre, is being celebrated on a new stamp that has been launched by the Royal Mail.

Pulteney Bridge is the UK’s finest example of an inhabited bridge and is one of ten bridge’s to feature in the Royal Mail’s new Bridges stamp issue.

The stamps depict ten leaps in engineering that have seen the UK’s bridges evolve from humble stone crossings to iconic landmarks and construction triumphs.

Cllr Ben Stevens, Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development, said: “It’s very exciting to have Pulteney Bridge featured as part of this new collection of stamps.

“Our Film Office provided advice and support to the photographer when he came to Bath to shoot the bridge, and our archive team helped to verify the factual information needed by Royal Mail.”

Andrew Hammond, Head of Stamps and Collectibles at Royal Mail, said: “The story of Britain’s engineering genius can be found in its bridges.

“These new stamps celebrate ten beautiful and ground-breaking landmarks that span centuries of our history.”

Designed by the esteemed Scottish architect Robert Adam, Pulteney Bridge was completed by 1774.

It was built to link the ancient centre of Bath with the proposed new Bathwick estate on the opposite bank of the River Avon.

Constructed from  Bath stone, with its three semi-circular arches and pedimented centre pavilion, Pulteney  Bridge is one of the most beautiful classical bridges in the world.

It is a Grade 1 listed building and one of only four bridges in the world to have shops on both sides of its full span

The stamps are on sale now and available at www.royalmail.com/bridges, by phone on 03457 641 641 and in 8000 Post Offices across the UK.
