Bath-based intellectual property law company EIP have taken part in a children’s workshop in Bath designed to inspire the next generation of inventors.
The Invent It! workshop at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution (BRLSI) took place on Saturday 10th May.
It included 20 children aged eight and over from schools including Widcombe, Westhaven, Grove, Paragon, Christ Church, St Saviours, St Keyna, St Stephens, St Johns and Weston Primary.
It is one of a number of children’s workshops run by the BRLSI to help further science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) education.
Together with other volunteers, who helped lead a series of activities where the children were challenged to use their ideas and imagination to solve a series of scientific problems, senior associate Ben Hoyle, from EIP’s office in Bath introduced the children to basic computer programming skills using a Raspberry Pi and the Scratch development environment.
EIP also donated the equipment used in the session to the BRLSI for use in future activities and Ben hopes to help out again.
Ben said: “It was an honour to help the regular volunteers of the BRLSI with their STEM activities. These volunteers do great work and the enthusiasm of the kids was infectious.”
Paul Thomas from the BRLSI said: “It was great having Ben at BRLSI for Invent It! Not only did he do a great job helping children to use a relatively new invention, the Raspberry Pi, but he was also able to tell them about how important patents are and the processes needed to obtain a patent.”
