Bath & North East Somerset Council’s school meals service has achieved the prestigious Silver Food For Life Catering Mark.
To celebrate, a special British Breakfast lunch was held at primary schools across the area on Wednesday 28th September.
The Food for Life Catering Mark is an independent endorsement from Soil Association Certification, and backed by annual inspections.
The aim of the scheme is to encourage and reward caterers who:
- Serve fresh food;
- Source environmentally sustainable and ethical food
- Make healthy eating easy, and
- Champion local food producers
Cllr Martin Veal (Conservative, Bathavon North), the Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: “I’d like to congratulate our school meals service on achieving the Silver Food for Life Catering Mark – this demonstrates that they are providing fresh, local, organic , healthy and ethically-sourced food to our local school children.
“Our pioneering new school food contract is also now underway and will allow more small producers to supply fresh produce to schools.”
This is part of a series of events being organised by the Council to mark British Food Fortnight (17th Sept – 2nd Oct) and to celebrate local, healthy and sustainable food in Bath and North East Somerset.
The Council has also launched a new local food directory to enable residents and visitors to easily find local producers and retailers and to shop directly online. It can be found here: www.bathnes.gov.uk/localfoodmap.
