Magistrates’ Court hears Bath man ‘perverted the course of justice’

A Bath man looks set to be investigated for perverting the course of justice over speeding offences.

Last week, Bath magistrates found Amy Cooper not guilty of a charge of failing to give information to the speed enforcement unit in Bristol in July 2024 relating to the identification of the driver of a black 67 reg Land Rover.

They had heard that her partner of nine years, Jordan Adams, had been intercepting her correspondence at their home in Walcot, and the first Miss Cooper discovered the deception was the week before Christmas when she opened a court summons.

She messaged her partner about it as he had not been at home at the time, and he replied with three emojis, including one of hands covering the face.

He also messaged her to say: “I’m honestly very sorry” and telling her he owed her “big time”.

At the trial on Wednesday 24th September, 34-year-old Miss Cooper said she is not the registered keeper of the vehicle and never has been.

The magistrates were told that the deception included falsely nominating her as the driver, pleading guilty in her name, setting up and communicating from an email address similar to hers and writing a letter purporting to be from her regarding one of the two speeding charges.

Miss Cooper had been unaware that her driving licence had been endorsed with six points.

She told the court that Mr Adams was “very much” aware of the serious situation he was in regarding perverting the course of justice.

After telling her she was a credible witness and finding her not guilty, the magistrates said that her legal costs would be payable from central funds.

Asked by the chair of the bench if Mr Adams was still her partner, Miss Cooper said the situation was “very complicated”.

Prosecutor Sue Cameron told the court that the Crown Prosecution Service would be suggesting that the police start proceedings against him.
