The Council is interested in hearing about events, exhibitions and activities that are being planned to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

August 2014 is the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.

A dedicated ‘What’s on’ page (www.bathnes.gov.uk/WW1centenary) has been launched on the Council’s website to list and publicise events and activities taking place locally to mark the centenary of World War One.

Organisations and groups are invited to submit information about their commemorative plans by emailing [email protected] or calling 01225 396138.

Councillor Paul Crossley (Lib-Dem, Southdown), Leader of Bath and North East Somerset Council, said: “100 years have passed since the start of the First World War.

“It is important and fitting that we mark the anniversary of an event that changed forever the lives of so many ordinary people and local communities, large and small.

“Bath and North East Somerset Council is keen to support local groups, organisations and individuals in publicising their commemorative events and activities, so that local residents and visitors to our area can learn more about World War One and its far-reaching impact.

“We hope that local organisers will get in touch so that we can spread the word and can all deepen our understanding of the War and its relevance today.”

The new web page will be constantly updated with news of local events and activities marking the anniversary.

The listings site will be a useful ‘one stop shop’ for residents and visitors interested in First World War themed events and activities taking place near them.

In addition to publicising local events, the Council will be organising a commemorative civic event on Monday 4th August, marking the centenary of the date when War was declared, and an exhibition of memorabilia.
