Roman Holiday bursts into a feel-good summer show from the very opening number.
The fairy tale style plot of the young princess desperate for freedom and the reporter in need of a good story is endearing and full of romance.
Filled with classic Cole Porter songs, it is hard for it to not be a hit with the audience.
Based on the film of the same name, this excellent company are in fine form and enters into the charm and era of the piece with relish.
Michael D. Xavier, the hack with morals, is a fine leading man as Joe. His vocals are delightful and he is well paired with Rebecca Collingwood as Princess Anne. They are both engaging and their romance develops well. The score is well chosen, allowing them to shine brightly.
Stephen Ridley, Musical Director, is in full control of the excellent team of musicians and the sound design by Tom Marshall fits the space with ease.
Directed by Jeremy Sams, the pace never falters and the story moves along with ease, despite some music-heavy moments and a lightweight script. There is good comedy which ensures that it never takes itself too seriously.
The supporting cast are equally good and the production has a feel-good vibrancy and sense of joy that makes it an enjoyable summer show and a welcome escape from the real world.
Roman Holiday is showing at Theatre Royal Bath until 1st July. Box office: 01225 448844.
