Thousands of local residents crowded Milsom Street yesterday evening to watch queen of cakes Mary Berry switch on Bath’s Christmas lights.
Bath-born Mary Berry switched on the city’s Christmas Lights following entertainment from a student band Too Much Lipstick and the Bath Vocal Works Gospel Choir.
Mary was a pupil at the High School in Bath where she first discovered her passion for cooking. For 60 years she has shared this passion with the nation’s cooks and has sold more than 5 million cookery books.
A new generation has been inspired by the Great British Bake Off and baking fever is sweeping the country, with more than 9 million people tuning in to see Mary Berry reveal the winner of this year’s competition.
The Bath Christmas Lights 2013 was co-ordinated by the Bath Business Improvement District (BID) Company and Bath & North East Somerset Council.
Switching on the lights marks the start of the Christmas shopping season, an important driver for the local economy.
Bath Rugby stars were rattling tins throughout the event for a popular local cause, The Forever Friends Cancer Care Appeal.
At the switch on, it was also announced that Mary Berry has been given the Freedom of the City of Bath. You can find out more here.
