A canal boat which completely sunk in a lock on a stretch of the Kennet and Avon canal in Bath at the weekend has caused the waterway to be completely closed.

The 65 foot long canal boat sunk after becoming stuck on the sill of the lock at around 2pm on Saturday afternoon.

The stretch of Kennet and Avon Canal at Widcombe has been completely blocked due to the incident.

The Canal and River Trust are believed to be working on removing the boat from the lock, following a similar incident back in March.

It is thought the boat was hired by a stag part for the weekend.

Nobody was hurt in the incident.

The Canal and River Trust have put pollution mats into the lock in an attempt to soak up diesel from the boat.

Lock 8/9 to Lock 13 are to remain closed to all boating until the boat is removed, with craft below Lock 8/9 being allowed to moor between lock 7 and 8/9, and on the floating landing stage below lock 7.
