The Romans travelled to Snows Stadium to face AFC Totton yesterday, Tuesday 14th April, knowing they had to win to prolong their battle against the drop.

But a 2-1 defeat means they cannot finish outside the bottom four and will be demoted to Pitching In Southern League Premier South for 2026-27.

City, in 22nd spot in the standings, can now finish no higher than 21st place, the last of the relegation berths. They are currently nine points behind Salisbury – who are in 20th position, the last of the ‘safe’ places – with just two matches to go.

Already-relegated Chippenham Town, currently 21st, are two points ahead of the Romans and also have a pair of games remaining.

Totton went ahead in the fourth minute, Ash Clarke scoring with a 25-yard piledriver.

Bath came close to levelling 11 minutes later. Donovan Wilson set up Scott Wilson, who rounded home keeper Ryan Gosney and sent in a shot – but Jacob Towns got back to clear.

The Hampshire club rode their luck and doubled the lead through a long-ranger from Christie Ward after 17 minutes.

However, the Romans gave themselves a lifeline when Alex Fisher scored with a low free-kick 12 minutes before half-time.

City created some good chances early in the second period but could not convert them into goals.

And Totton almost struck again on the hour, guests’ gloveman Harvey Wiles-Richards making a brilliant save to deny home skipper Tyler Cordner’s header following a corner.

Scott Barlett’s Bath had the better of the final 30 minutes but were unable to turn around the scoreline, meaning they fall through the trapdoor to Step 3.

Bath: Harvey Wiles-Richards, Joe Raynes, Dan Greenslade, Ollie Tomlinson, Kieran Parselle, Scott Wilson, Alex Fisher (Matt Bowman, 67), Owen Windsor, Jaiden Putman (Jordan Alves, 67), Donovan Wilson, Josh Laqeretabua. Unused subs: Charlie Binns, Brad Ash, Louis Sweeten, Owen Pritchard, Reubin Sheppard.

The Romans will be back in action tomorrow, Thursday 16th April, when they take on Frome Town at the Cannon Clarke Stadium @ Twerton Park in the second of the semi-finals of the Francis Hillier Premier Cup, formerly the Somerset Premier Cup (7.45pm).

Bath will play the Robins in Southern League Premier South next term, as the Mid Somerset outfit have secured promotion from Division One South as champions.

Tickets for the county-cup derby are available here.

The winners will face Portishead Town in the final, at the Cannon Clarke Stadium @ Twerton Park, on Tuesday 21st April (7.45pm).

City could also be in the same division as Posset during the new season, as the North Somerset side are chasing a third successive promotion.

Portishead are guaranteed a place in the Southern League Division One South play-offs, having been in Western League Division One as recently as 2024.

The Romans will visit promotion-chasing Dorking Wanderers on Saturday 18th April (3pm) in their National League South away finale. The match is all-ticket.

Tickets are only available online, here.

When Bath faced Dorking at the Cannon Clarke Stadium @ Twerton Park in a league match on Saturday 30th August, two home keepers – Wiles-Richards and Martin Horsell – were sent off.

Wanderers won that game 2-1 but the Romans gained revenge in the Isuzu FA Trophy third round on Saturday 13th December, prevailing 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Meadowbank Stadium.

City will wrap up their current National League South tenure at home to Maidstone United on Saturday 25th April.
