A man was rescued by firefighters yesterday morning after a fire at his home in Durley Park in Oldfield Park in Bath.
Fire crews were called to the scene at around 6.20am after a neighbour heard a smoke alarm sounding and called 999.
When crews arrived they could see smoke coming from the first floor flat and could hear the smoke alarm activating.
Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus forced entry into the property and found a fire in the kitchen caused by cooking left under a grill.
They removed the cooking and ventilated the property.
Fortunately the smoke alarms had worked in the property and alerted the neighbour to the fire.
During a search of the premises they found a man in his 30s asleep in a bedroom with the door closed. They assisted him to safety and he did not need any treatment.
Avon Fire & Rescue Service are reminding people to take care when cooking and never leave it unattended as it could catch fire.
They are also reminding people to ensure they have working smoke alarms in their homes. They provide the occupants with time to get out, but only if they are working. The batteries should be tested regularly.
As the man had closed the door to his bedroom this prevented the fire and smoke from spreading and may have saved his life.
