Bath-based Hetreed Ross Architects are celebrating winning the National Local Authority Building Control Awards 2013 for Best Community Building for a new educational and community facility.
Fairfield Farm College in Westbury equips young adults with learning difficulties with practical skills in real world environments. Hetreed Ross has developed a masterplan with the college to transform the previous assortment of agricultural buildings into a smart new campus.
The national award was for Phase 1 of the realisation of the project to create a new shop, café and conference room as well as new teaching rooms, offices and common room. The new café and shop, where the students train, have proved immensely popular with the local community.
Hetreed Ross had sweeping success at the LABC West of England regional awards in the summer taking Best Community Building for Fairfield Farm College, Highly Commended for Best Conversion at Jamie’s Farm near Bath and being shortlisted in 5 other categories.
Ann Ross, director of Hetreed Ross Architects, with architect Ellie Risius and Janet Kenward of Fairfield Farm College attended the prestigious black-tie awards dinner in London with 500 other people from the construction industry.
LABC Chief Executive Paul Everall said: “All our winners demonstrated how attention to detail and a positive working relationship with Building Control departments can achieve high quality and sustainable buildings fit for the future.
“Fairfield Farm College is a truly remarkable project, providing 36 young adults with learning difficulties with a fantastic learning environment and creating new community facilities in a building way above normal building standards. The planning and execution of this project has been first rate – even allowing the college to remain operating during the construction.”
