Bath Spa University’s Students’ Union have launched a campaign encouraging students to vote in the EU Referendum on Thursday 23rd June, with comedian Eddie Izzard visiting the city today to give his views.

To help students make a decision on which way to vote, the union will host a symposium about the EU referendum on at Komedia Bath, on Westgate Street this afternoon.

There will be two speakers – for and against staying in the EU. Stand-up comedian, actor, and writer Eddie Izzard will put forward his views to remain in the EU and Bath businessman, musician and songwriter, Tim Hegarty will put forward his arguments to leave.

Each speaker will put forward their views in a short speech before taking questions from the audience.

Christina Slade, Vice-Chancellor at Bath Spa University, said: “The economic policies and decisions made in the next month will affect our students’ future. Our Bath Spa student community deserve to have a say and young people need to be heard.

“For the younger generation to have significant political influence they must turn out in greater numbers and our students have a part to play in that.”

Bath Spa University’s Students’ Union President Elect, Kitty Hilton who will Chair the event on Thursday said: “The EU referendum is the most important landmark in the UK calendar this year.

“If you aren’t already registered then make sure you do it by the deadline of Thursday 7 June – it’s so easy and only takes a few minutes online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

“Voting is an important right and we have a duty to exercise this – make sure you register first so you don’t miss out on the right to have your say in the biggest decision of our lifetime.”
