A three-year-old boy who was taken to Bath’s Police Station after he got lost in the city in August 1978 is looking for the woman who took him so he can thank her.

In August 1978, Richard Chapman was on holiday with his family in Bath when he became lost in Royal Victoria Park.

Richard’s family were visiting from North Lincolnshire and he didn’t know the area.

He wandered, crying, near to a road and was picked up by a woman who took him to Bath Police Station where he was reunited with his family.

He was three years old at the time. Now, with a young family of his own, he is keen to find the woman who helped him all those years ago and to thank her.

He said: “I have never known who that woman was, but I’m convinced that in stopping her car, talking to me and taking me to the police station, she may have saved me from serious harm.”

He believes he was picked up on Upper Bristol Road in the early afternoon on a Saturday in August, possibly the bank holiday weekend.

Unfortunately the police have not been able to find a record of the events as there was no crime recorded.

If anyone has information that could help reunite Richard with the woman who helped him, call Avon and Somerset Police on 101.

This appeal is part of the police’s 40 years of Avon and Somerset celebrations – to find out more about visit their website.
