The London Road redevelopment has been heralded as “a huge win for community campaigning and grassroots involvement in Bath.
Over £2.7million is being invested to give the London Road, its businesses and homes an overhaul, to improve the look and feel of the area, by resurfacing the pavements, installing a tree lined avenue and new cycle lanes, and renovating, repairing and redecorating buildings.
Liberal Democrat Cllr Lisa Brett who has led on securing the huge investment and overhaul, said: “I started this campaign 4 years ago as a local resident who wanted to see this area improved.
“And thanks to the Liberal Democrats on the Council the community have been empowered to see it done.”
“This is a community-led project. We had over 70 people apply to be involved in the decision making process, and we undertook extensive consultation.
“Our recent survey showed 97% of people on the London Road think it’s a good move.”
Steve Bradley, Parliamentary Campaigner for Bath said: “This is a huge win for community campaigning and grassroots involvement in Bath.
“Next month the Bath Transport Strategy will go to Cabinet, just another example of the Council working hard to improve transport and roads in Bath.”
Efforts are ongoing to convince the Government to stop HGVs going through the centre of Bath. Attempts have been made by local Lib Dems to put a weight restriction on Cleveland Bridge to stop HGVs using Bath as a through route and disturbing local residents.
Unfortunately, this was overturned by central Government. The Council is now looking at new opportunities to reduce traffic on the London Road.
Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development, Cllr Ben Stevens, said: “We had a small hiccup where the contractors accidentally ordered and installed the wrong pavement, but that’s been rectified now.
“We’re very pleased that we aren’t seeing additional delays on London Road due to the works.”
