Dispensary Manager Liz Sinkins is celebrating after being named Pharmacy Technician of the Year at the Association of Pharmacy Technicians (APTUK) Awards 2015.

The ‘APTUK and AAH Pharmacy Technician of the Year Award for Patient Safety’ is a national award that is presented each year to a pharmacy technician who has been involved in a project, role or piece of work that has directly improved patient safety.

Liz was recognised for her work leading on a project at the RUH, enabling Pharmacists and Medicines Management Technicians at the Trust to be granted access to a secure shared electronic care records system containing real-time data and the full list of medications that a patient has been prescribed by other care providers – be it primary, secondary, mental health or social care.

As well as getting the project successfully off the ground, Liz has also been training staff in how to use the innovative system.

Liz said: “The beauty of the system is how intelligent and targeted it is.

“This means that we are able to access only the information that is relevant to us – striking that vital balance between the patient’s privacy and confidentiality, and having all the vital information we need about a patient’s medication.”

Liz received her award at the APTUK conference and awards dinner at Aston University in the West Midlands.

She said: “I was shocked but incredibly proud to have won the award – not just for myself but for the Trust and our patients.

“Being able to access the secure shared records not only helps the care providers within their roles but essentially it helps to ensure that our patients receive all their medicines at the right dose and at the right time.”
