The Royal United Hospital (RUH) in Bath has been shortlisted for two National Patient Safety Awards in recognition of delivering safe care and further embedding patient safety within the Trust.

The hospital is a finalist for the Education and Training Award for its innovative sepsis training and awareness campaign.

In the first 60 days of the campaign, over 700 multi-disciplinary staff were trained in the early detection and treatment of sepsis to further improve the outcome for patients who have developed the condition.

Dr Lesley Jordan, Consultant Anesthetist and Patient Safety Lead, RUH said: “Sepsis is the body’s systemic response to an infection which can result more serious consequences.

“It is a time critical condition but, it can be challenging to diagnose as the signs can be similar to other common conditions. Early detection is important in securing the best outcome for patients.”

“We provided on-the-job training for our frontline staff to support prompt diagnosis and treatment of sepsis. It was received exceptionally well and we have seen further improvements in the management of sepsis as a result.”

The RUH has also been shortlisted for the Changing Culture to Improve Patient Safety Award in recognition for its work in further improving the safety culture in its operating theatres.

Helen Blanchard, Director of Nursing and Midwifery commented: “Being shortlisted for these awards shines a spotlight on the success and commitment by our staff throughout the RUH. They should be very proud that this has been acknowledged nationally.”

“We have also shared the concept of our training and checklist initiatives with our healthcare partners, so they can replicate it within their own organisations.”

The annual Patient Safety Awards continues to recognise and reward outstanding practice within the NHS and independent healthcare organisations.

Dr Jordan will attend the Patient Awards ceremony held in Manchester on 5th July 2016 where the winners will be announced.
