A community hall in Peasedown St John has reopened after refurbishment works, thanks to the support of local councillors and the housing and support organisation Curo.

St John’s Close Community Hall, which has been a popular meeting place for decades, is well used throughout the week by local people and the Peasedown St John Residents’ Association.

Since 2013, the Association has used the centre as its base and a location to hold seasonal parties, fundraising events, community meetings, breakfast get–togethers and film nights.

Residents’ Association Chair Joy Gosz said: “St John’s Community Hall has become a well-used central meeting place with activities now held almost every day of the week.

“Whether it’s KARMA, our women’s support group on a Friday, or our Tuesday Drop In, we have something for everyone.”

Thanks to funding secured by local councillors Sarah Bevan and Karen Walker, the interior has recently undergone a refurbishment makeover.

Funding from Cllr Sarah Bevan’s Initiative Fund has paid for internet wifi to be installed, and Cllr Karen Walker provided funds for new curtains.

Cllr Sarah Bevan (Independent, Peasedown St John) said: “Joy Gosz and her team work exceptionally hard for the local community. They go out of their way to help others and have turned a seldomly used residential hall into a thriving community centre.”

Refurbishment has also included the fitting of a brand new carpet, and a fresh coat of paint on the internal walls, thanks to Curo Housing and local resident Roy Coates.

Cllr Karen Walker (Independent, Peasedown St John) added: “As well as these recent improvements, the Residents’ Association secured funding last year for a new digital freeview flatscreen TV, sofa, a new instant water boiler, a fridge-freezer and an oven.

“Thanks to a range of new groups and activities at the hall, so many local people are feeling a renewed sense of pride in our community again. They really should be applauded for their efforts.”

Cllrs Sarah Bevan and Karen Walker joined Peasedown St John Residents’ Association members last Thursday for the official re-opening of the hall.
