A fire which started in the common room area of Monkton Combe School on the edge of Bath yesterday evening has extinguished by firefighters.
Fire crews were called to the scene at 9.38pm and on arrival entered the premises which was being rented out by a group of approximately ten people.
They had self-evacuated when the fire alarms had activated.
Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two high pressure hose reels and a 45mm jet to extinguish the fire.
They then cleared smoke from the area using a positive pressure ventilation fan.
It’s thought the fire started accidentally after candles were placed too close to curtains.
Avon Fire & Rescue Service are taking the opportunity to remind people to take care when using candles.
Never leave them unattended, always fully extinguish them after use and never place them close to curtains or furnishings.
Firefighters also dealt with another fire last night at 9.21pm in the kitchen of a two storey property in Combe Down which was started because of a fault with a dishwasher.
When crews arrived on scene they found the couple who live in the house already outside and unharmed.
Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the house and dealt with the fire using a high pressure hose reel. A positive pressure ventilation fan was used to clear the smoke.
While on scene firefighters noticed that the smoke alarms in the property were faulty so they fitted two new devices and carried out a Home Fire Safety Visit free of charge.
