The M4 motorway is closed westbound between junction 17 (Chippenham) and junction 18 (Bath) following the serious collision, which happened just after 1.30am.

Four vehicles were involved. One person has sadly died and a second person was seriously injured and taken to hospital.

Avon and Somerset Police say the closure is likely to remain in place throughout this morning for investigation work to be carried out at the scene.

All vehicles that were trapped within the closure have now been released.

Highways England have put diversions in place, with motorists being urged to leave extra time for their journeys.

Those being diverted should follow the solid diamond symbol.

Exit the M4 at J17 and at the roundabout take the 2nd exit, travel south on the A350 to Chippenham. Travel west on the A420 to Cold Ashton and at the roundabout take the 3rd exit.

Travel north on the A46 to re-join the M4.
