Almost 300 children have already signed up to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge at B&NES Council’s Libraries, which is aiming to get those aged between 4 and 11 reading over the summer.
Working with the Reading Agency, all libraries across Bath and North East Somerset, including the mobile library, are taking part.
Launch events were well attended but there’s still time to take on the challenge which runs until 9th September.
Those who sign up will need to borrow and read six books; these can be fiction, non-fiction, older picture books or even audio books.
Upon return of the book participants should ask a member of staff to stamp their reading record. Once six books have been read a certificate and medal will be given to the child, subject to availability.
The theme of this year’s event is ‘Animal Agents’.
Councillor Tim Warren (Conservative, Mendip), Leader of the Council, said: “With schools just breaking up, now is the perfect time to sign up to the Summer Reading Challenge. It’s always a popular activity for children and families to get involved in over the long summer break.
Not only do the children feel a sense of achievement at completing the challenge, but it also helps to maintain or even improve their reading level.
To sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge you need to be a member of Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Library Service, which you can join at any branch.
When borrowing books for the challenge, you must show your library card each time you visit.
