Bath College has said it is working with unions to look at ways to minimise job losses after announcing proposals for compulsory redundancies on Tuesday, due to government funding cuts.
The college, which has campuses in the centre of Bath and Radstock, has said that around 40 compulsory redundancies are likely, and that it has been a ‘hard decision to make’.
The staff at Bath College were told about the proposals during a meeting on Tuesday, and work is now being undertaken to reduce the impact the job losses will cause.
In a statement issued by Bath College, they said: “Similar to schools, the further education sector has experienced government funding cuts. To address this issue, Bath College has undertaken a number of efficiency savings but unfortunately we have had to announce proposals for approximately 39 compulsory redundancies.
“Staff were notified of these proposals yesterday and the College is working with the unions to look at ways of minimising these job losses.”
The Principal of the College, Laurel Penrose, said: “This is a hard decision to make, but one that will help secure the future for the College.
“The College will continue to offer excellent provision in a wide range of technical and professional qualifications, and this decision will not negatively impact on the delivery and the future success of our students.”
