Avon and Somerset Police have launched an appeal for the public’s help with an investigation into the unexplained death of a 22-year-old student in Bath.

Alex Green, an economics student at the University of Bath, was found unconscious at a bus stop in Westmoreland Road, just off the Lower Bristol Road, in the early hours of Saturday 30th September.

He was taken to the Royal United Hospital and then onto Southmead Hospital, where he died three days later from internal head injuries.

Police were informed about Alex’s death on Tuesday 3rd October and an investigation was launched.

DI Dom Graham, the lead officer, said: “We’re carrying out a thorough and extensive investigation into the tragic death of Alex Green, which is currently being treated as unexplained.

“Alex’s family have been devastated by his death and our thoughts and sympathies are with them. We’re doing all we can to support them and provide them with answers, but we need the public’s help.

“Our investigation is currently focussing on three main scenarios:

  • Did Alex die as a result of a fall?
  • Was Alex assaulted prior to his death?
  • Was Alex involved in a road traffic collision?

“We’re keeping an open mind as to what caused Alex’s death.

“As part of our ongoing investigation we’ve collected CCTV from around the area where Alex was found, and have also conducted house-to-house enquiries.

“Alex had been out with friends for a night out in the city centre and spent several hours in The Second Bridge nightclub in Walcot Street. He got split up from his friends and walked home on his own.

“We have traced his movements on that night and he was last seen on CCTV from the Green Park Tavern walking into Westmoreland Road, off Lower Bristol Road, on his own at about 3.42am on Saturday 30 September.

“Two vehicles are seen to go into the road after him, the last being the number “U1” First Bus at 3.46am.

“We’ve examined CCTV recordings from the bus and Alex is not captured on its footage.

“A group of five people walk into Westmoreland Road and find Alex lying on the ground near the bus stop. These people are being treated as witnesses.

“The ambulance service was called at 3.49am and Alex was taken to hospital, where the extent of his injuries was discovered. He sadly died in hospital just a few days later.”

Did you see Alex Green on the night of Friday 29th September into the early hours of the Saturday 30th September? Did you see him in the Second Bridge Nightclub? Do you have information which you haven’t yet given to the police?

  • Did you drive into Westmoreland Road from Lower Bristol Road, or in the other direction, between 3.30am and 4am on Saturday 30th September? Were you walking in the area during this timeframe?
  • Did you hear or see anything suspicious in the Westmoreland Road or Lower Bristol Road area around the time of this incident?
  • Do you have any information about how Alex may have suffered an injury to his head that night?

If you can help their inquiry, call Investigations on 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5217225858.

You don’t have to speak to the police if you don’t want to. You can call the independent charity Crimestoppers with information on 0800 555 111 or online via www.crimestoppers-uk.org – they never trace your call or ask for your name.
