Crews are being invited to put themselves forward for this year’s Bath Dragon Boat Race, which is set to take place on Sunday 10th September at Bath Riverside in aid of charity Designability.

The fundraising event will see teams go head to head in a series of heats in front of crowds of spectators to see who will be crowned top dragons.

Each crew of up to 11 members, to include a drummer to keep everyone in time, will paddle at least three 200m courses in a traditional 30’ dragon boat.

Everyone who participates in the Bath Dragon Boat Race will be raising much needed funds for the charity Designability who run the Wizzybug Loan Scheme which provides free, powered wheelchairs to disabled children under 5.

Katie Tanner, community fundraiser for Designability, said: “There hasn’t been a dragon boat race in the city for some years and we thought it would be a fun way for people to come together and raise money to support children to have access to independence, freedom and play in a Wizzybug wheelchair.”

“We are thankful to Crest Nicholson for permitting us use of the land at Bath Riverside to host the event and all the plans are coming together thanks to the kind support of Dovetail Properties and two local volunteers, Mac Sparrow and Steven Tanner.”

Each crew member has to be 16 and over but no previous experience is necessary – just plenty of team spirit.

Crews can be mixed, all female or all male and you may enter more than one crew for a bit of added competition. Fancy dress is optional, but encouraged.

The dragon boats, qualified helms and all equipment will be supplied by Gable Events, the company who will be co-ordinating the racing on the day.

The entry donation per Dragon Boat is £500 and crews are then asked to raise a minimum of £600 in sponsorship to support the Wizzybug Loan Scheme.

If you would like to enter a team, email [email protected] or call 01225 824103 to obtain a registration form.
