Recycling waste food has resulted in five local charities receiving cash donations, thanks to the Feed Me and Win campaign, supported by Bath & North East Somerset Council.

The scheme rewards residents for recycling their waste food.  Each week one winner is selected and can choose a £50 shopping voucher of their choice or make a £50 donation to their preferred charity.

Joyce from Bath chose to donate her £50 win to the Trussell Trust to support their work with food banks.

Trussell Trust were thrilled with the donation: “We couldn’t continue our work to stop UK hunger without donations like this; by supporting the Trussell Trust and our network of foodbanks across the country, this Feed Me & Win donation will help to transform lives.”

Other charities to benefit so far include Bristol Children’s Hospital, the NSPCC, The Salvation Army, and the Bath Cats Protection League.

Cllr Martin Veal (Conservative, Bathavon North), Cabinet Member for Community Services said:  “Encouraging people to think more about food waste through careful buying and storage is crucial both now and in the future. Anything that is left shouldn’t be put out with our general rubbish – it needs to be recycled.

“Waste food can be put to good use and recycled into electricity and fertiliser.  If all the waste food sent to landfill across the West of England was recycled it could power more than 4200 homes a year.”

Feed Me and Win is a resident reward campaign running across the West of England including Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol City, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Councils.

Now is a really good time to start recycling your food, if you are not doing so already, with prizes available every week until March 2016.

Feed Me and Win is currently selecting one household at random every week in each council area to win a £50 shopping voucher or make a £50 donation to charity.

Over Christmas this is increasing to 12 daily rewards in each area worth up to £70 each, and in Jackpot January rewards of £100 will be allocated at random each week.

At every stage winners are able to donate their reward value to the favourite British charity.
