Families across the Bath area are being encouraged to celebrate Halloween safely this year after last year’s events saw an increase in calls to the emergency services.
On Halloween in 2021, Avon Fire & Rescue Service received 123 calls, compared with 60 calls on the same day in 2020, over double the number of incidents.
Whether carving pumpkins, dressing up or going trick or treating, Halloween is a time that many people look forward to, and celebrate with various traditions.
Group Manager Ben Thompson, based in AF&RS Risk Reduction Team, said: “Simple swaps such as battery-powered LED lights instead of candles for pumpkins are much safer and can reduce the risk of burns and other injuries which can have life-long impacts.
“Another important tip is to make sure that everyone in your family knows how to STOP, DROP and ROLL if their clothing catches alight: stop where you are, drop to the floor and roll over and over until the flames are out. Make sure to practise before the celebrations begin.”
Some of the swaps suggested by Avon Fire & Rescue include:
- Instead of buying a costume, why not make a safe, cheaper, alternative at home? You could use recycled materials and perhaps even give old glad rags a new life as costume accessories. Be sure never to use flammable materials such as bin liners when crafting your costume.
- If you’re looking for that eerie glow, opt for LED lights instead of lit candles. They’re much safer and can be used again and again for years of Halloween fun.
- Looking for a game for your Halloween party? Swap pass the parcel for stop, drop and roll! Watch Fido the FireDog’s useful video, so you know how to stop, drop and roll if your clothing catches fire. Quick thinking and actions when the worst happens could help prevent more serious injuries.
- Not interested in receiving trick or treaters? Print out a poster here, or write your own to politely ask that trick or treaters don’t call at your house. Always tell your children to be respectful of those that do not want to receive trick or treaters.
- Halloween can be frightening and overstimulating for some people, so check in with those around you, and make a plan to enjoy your evening. If you or someone you know is going to be alone this Halloween night, why not arrange to meet up? You could watch a spooky film, eat some tasty snacks or perhaps do something unrelated to Halloween if you prefer.
