Curo has appointed award-winning artist and designer Peter Marigold to create an artwork as part of the new Community Hub at Mulberry Park in Bath.

Marigold, who was shortlisted for the Woman’s Hour Craft Prize on Monday, was selected last week by a panel including local residents.

He has been appointed to research, design, fabricate and install a permanent art installation linked to the new building and integrated into the wider development.

The art commission is part of a major investment by housing association and house-builder Curo, recognising the unique value that artists can bring to new developments and in engaging with communities.

The £10M community hub, primary school and children’s nursery sits at the heart of the Mulberry Park development fronting onto a new public square.

Designed by internationally renowned architects BDP as a beacon for the local community, the new community hub will include a café, meeting rooms, multifunctional spaces and an enterprise area with lettable space for a range of businesses.

The hub, primary school and 70-place children’s nursery will open at Mulberry Park in September 2018.

Peter Marigold is a renowned artist and designer based in London. He studied Sculpture at Central St Martins and Product Design at the Royal College of Art, where he was taught by Ron Arad.

He subsequently created works for Paul Smith and the V&A Museum of Childhood in London and exhibits regularly at Milan’s furniture fair and Design Miami. He also teaches on the BA Furniture course at London Metropolitan University.

Peter is currently working on a major public commission for Edinburgh’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children as part of a therapeutic design programme.

Peter will work with the local community to research, design and create an artwork specific to its setting at Mulberry Park.

Commenting on his appointment, Peter said: “I am delighted to be appointed to create an artwork for the Community Hub and look forward to spending more time in Foxhill exploring possible materials and developing my designs in the coming months”.

Gerraint Oakley, Gerraint Oakley, Managing Director of Curo Homes said: “Peter is a truly innovative, original artist and designer, and his status has been further confirmed by the Woman’s Hour Craft Prize shortlist.

We’re delighted that he will be working with us and the local community to create something special at Mulberry Park
