From the old-fashioned weighing scales to the tinned ham and boxes of cereal on the shelves, residents at St John’s Court in Bath are stepping back in time.
The Sweet Pod is the latest RemPod to be used by Sirona care & health to encourage people to talk and express their feelings as well as assisting in the care of those with dementia.
Susan Lane, Extra Care Manager at St John’s Court, said: “It gives tenants a chance to remember what was sold in the 1940s; they’ve all been enjoying using it and remembering groceries and sweets which they used to buy.
“It’s a great way to initiate conversation and we end up talking about a whole range of items, events and experiences.”
The RemPod shop is set at the time of the Queen’s coronation and joins a 1950s pub and lounge in Sirona’s collection.
And while initially used to support those with dementia within extra care staff have found it benefits all residents.
The RemPods were designed by Gloucestershire based Richard Ernest, whose own grandfather had dementia.
