Wessex Water has begun powering their office at Claverton Down using renewable energy generated from sunlight, after more than 950 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels were recently been installed on the roof of their operations centre.
The installation of the panels is part of their ongoing commitment to reducing their carbon footprint and becoming more energy efficient.
The new PV system is 250kW in size and is expected to generate 230,128 kWh of renewable electricity per year, helping to power the office as well as further the building’s green credentials and improve sustainability.
Energy generation analyst Julia Carling said: “By generating electricity from a renewable source we’ll be preventing the release of 113 tonnes of carbon dioxide emission per annum and the system will also contribute towards our target of 24% renewable generation by 2020.”
The operations centre has previously been judged as one of the ‘greenest offices’ in Europe due to its natural ventilation, motion and light level sensitive lighting, solar thermal water heating and rainwater harvesting and was awarded the RICS Building of the Year in 2001 and the Civic Trust Award in 2003.
