Crews from Bath’s Fire Station were sent to Freshford early on Wednesday morning following reports of a blaze in a detached property in the village.
Avon Fire & Rescue was alerted by a member of the public who could see the fire involving the remote property at just before 7.30am.
Two fire engines from Bath Fire Station and two from Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service were sent to the incident.
Once on scene they found the property well alight, with a fire involving the first floor and roof.
Crews used two main jets to tackle the fire as well as a high pressure hose reel.
The fire caused the roof to collapse as well as extensive damage throughout the rest of the house.
Due to the extent of the damage a structural engineer has been called in to carry out an assessment of the building’s stability.
The property has been almost totally destroyed by the fire.
Investigations are continuing to establish whether the property was occupied at the time of the fire, the cause of which is unknown at this stage.
