10 – 19 November
Bath Film Festival celebrates its 21st anniversary this year with a variety of special events and one-off appearances by film-makers packed into 10 days. A key element of the festival this year is a celebration of one of the world’s greatest film directors, Ken Loach, who has recently turned 75.
Another key strand is the screening of a great number of films from British directors. The festival is a great opportunity to catch some of these major forthcoming films before their general release, and in some cases, their only appearance in Bath.
The Festival opens on Nov 10th with *The British Guide to Showing Off* – Andrew Logan’s outrageous, and spectacular costume pageant: the Alternative Miss World Show. Other films showcasing the best of British talent include *Bash Street*, made in Chippenham no less, with director and cast attending (we also hope to welcome Melanie Chisholm – Sporty Spice – who contributed music to the film), previews of Steve McQueen’s *Shame* – with producer Iain Canning for Q&A, as well as Ralph Fiennes’s directorial debut, *Coriolanus*, all providing proof that the British film industry is thriving.
We are also proud to present a selection of gripping documentaries: Eric Morrel’s *Tabloid*, about Joyce McKinney’s alleged abduction of a young Mormon missionary, *Marathon Boy* which tells the tale of impoverished young runner Budhia Singh, and the alarming *Blood in the Mobile*, in which a bloody minded journalist asks uncomfortable questions of Nokia, and investigates mining conditions in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
A superb panel of TV, film and media pundits will be joining us for a special industry event, *Breaking and Entering*, to help budding filmmakers find their first steps within a business that can be daunting.
Classic re-issues this year include *The Great White Silence*, Herbert Ponting’s beautifully restored record of Captain Scott’s ill-fated journey to the South Pole, intense psychodrama *La Piscine* and unjustly overlooked 80s gem *Cutter’s Way*.
