Access to Higher Education students at City of Bath College have received free copies of an international best-selling novel as part of World Book Night.
The students received a copy of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak from Literary Studies tutor Larissa Perry, a designated ‘book giver’ for the national project.
World Book Night is a national event which promotes books and reading. The event, which took place on Monday 23rd April, saw a million books given away to members of the public across Europe and the US.
A huge team of 20,000 volunteers each distributed 24 books, from a list of 25 titles. Books were also delivered to more hard to reach places, such as hospitals.
Larissa said: “The Book Thief is a fantastic novel, one of my favourites, and I was delighted to be given the chance to pass on copies to my students.
“World Book Night is a great event. It’s such a pleasure to give people books and I think it is a wonderful way of promoting and encouraging reading. You are encouraged to share your favourite books by giving copies to complete strangers. I gave copies of The Book Thief to people in streets and shops around Bath and also left one in a coffee shop for whoever might find it.
“World Book Night has been a massive success since it started in 2011 and I hope to be part of the event again next year.“
The College’s popular Access to Higher Education course is targeted at adult learners who want to go on to Higher Education. It aims to re-familiarise students with learning processes and help them achieve the nationally recognised qualifications needed to go on to Higher Education.
Students on the literacy studies module of the Access course go on to study degrees in a wide range of subjects including education, creative writing, psychology, law and philosophy.
