An antique carriage clock worth more than £4,000, stolen from a house in Bathwick, and antique furniture worth more than £40,000, stolen from a house in St James’s Square, are among nearly a hundred items recovered by Avon and Somerset Police in Bath on the first day of a drive to combat serious acquisitive crime across the area.

Officers working on Relentless – helping you feel safe in Avon and Somerset, carried out three warrants in the Bath and Midsomer Norton areas on Monday and arrested three men on suspicion of burglary and handling stolen goods. They have been bailed pending further inquiries.

The recovered carriage clock, pictured, was stolen from a house inForrester Road, Bathwick in August while the owners were on holiday. It is among around 80 other suspected stolen items seized from a house in Midsomer Norton. Detectives are now trying to discover their provenance.

Officers acting on intelligence also arrested a man who was trying to sell antique furniture reported stolen from a house in St James’s Square last weekend, Sept 8th-9th. They recovered a matching pair of 18th century marble-topped tables and a 19th century wooden box containing glasses and decanters. The arrested man was yesterday, Tuesday Sept 11th, being questioned in police custody.

Det Chief Insp Nick Papuca of Bath CID said: “This was a very successful start and sends out the clear message that we will be relentless in tracking down and dealing with people who commit serious acquisitive crimes.

“These people cause disruption and misery in our communities and we will be running numerous and frequent operations to disrupt their activities and bring them to justice.”
