Homeowners and tenants with examples of energy saving measures in their homes are being encouraged to sign-up to Bath Green Homes – a community project run by the Council, Transition Bath, and Bath Preservation Trust.
A programme of events related to home energy efficiency will be held during March and April 2013 including an Open Homes weekend on 13th & 14th April. Bath Green Homes is kindly sponsored by Future Supply Ltd. During the weekend people will have the opportunity to visit a variety of homes that have either been built or had changes made to them to make them warmer, greener and cheaper to run.
Last year there were 12 open homes across Bath and North East Somerset and they attracted over 600 visitors – this year the aim is to open more homes and local residents are being encouraged to get involved.
Homes can be any age, from heritage to new build and any type, from flats to family homes, owned or rented. Energy features can range from the low cost to the high-tech and may include draught proofing, advanced insulation or glazing, low carbon or renewable energy technologies, rainwater harvesting, or even a green roof.
Those who are interested in opening their home will be given full support, including a home visit by the co-ordinator, a pack containing all the information and materials you need, an opportunity to meet other home openers, and volunteer stewards to help on the day. Visit the Open Homes page on the website to find out more and fill in the expression of interest form.
Paul Stansall, who took part in the last event, said, “Moira and I were delighted to be amongst the Home Openers of 2012. Stimulating conversations, meeting new people, exchanging ideas and telling the story of how our Georgian home has become more comfortable, cheaper to run and more energy efficient, all made our weekend opening hugely worthwhile. We’ll be back for more in 2013 so please come and join us.”
Councillor Paul Crossley (Lib-Dem, Southdown), Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council said: “Bath & North East Somerset Council is committed to working with our local communities to develop a greener, low carbon future. Bath Green Homes is a great way to share ideas about making our homes more energy efficient and I encourage home-owners to get involved.”
Janey Abbot from Bath Preservation Trust said “Residents of our old and listed buildings, in particular, are feeling the pinch as energy prices continue to rise. It is important to preserve the character of these houses and reduce carbon emissions, so people who have improved the energy efficiency of their homes are invited to share their experiences.”
If you are interested in Bath Green Homes but don’t feel your home would be suitable, there are lots of other ways you can get involved including volunteering, organising events, sponsoring, supporting in kind, and spreading the word.
