Former City of Bath College student and voice of this year’s John Lewis Christmas advert Gabrielle Aplin has made Bath proud by becoming this week’s UK Top 40 Singles Chart number one.

The singer, who’s cover of The Power of Love has reached the top of the charts, was at BBC Radio 1’s studios when the number one was announced.

20-year-old Aplin joined the Parlophone record label in March this year after success from the college’s BA1 Records label.

She began hitting the spotlight back in 2010 after covers of songs she posted on YouTube gained her airtime on BBC Radio Wiltshire.

Darren Rogers, Creative Director of TEMPA, the umbrella which BA1 Records is part of in the college, told us: “We are all absolutely delighted by her success. She’s a great example to all our other musicians at BA1 Records. The team there work very hard with the students to develop their talent,  provide them with some great performance opportunities and to offer them advice from industry professionals. We have more than our fair share of talented young people here and we’ll be introducing some of them in 2013 at a special event in Bath.“

Aplin’s first major label single “Please Don’t Say You Love Me” is set for release on 10th February 2013.
