This May sees the return of the popular cycle racing to Bath’s Royal Victoria Park, once again supported by Bath & North East Somerset Council.
Following on from its successful introduction in 2011, Bath Cycle Races 2012 features a five-week series that will run every Wednesday evening throughout May. Round one Starts at 6.45pm on Wednesday 2 May, with each evening being hosted by one of the local cycling clubs in association with British Cycling.
The short and sharp nature of the circuit, which includes a tight turn around the obelisk, promises fast and furious racing, great for spectators and competitors alike. Each round will see four races catering for a range of riders – from youth through to elite categories.
New to this year, it is also planned to hold ‘Go Ride’ events in Royal Victoria Park to cater for younger children and aspiring racers in advance of the main races.
Councillor David Dixon (Lib-Dem, Oldfield), Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “We hope to encourage people of all ages and abilities to come along and enjoy the Bath Cycle Races – whether taking part or watching the action. Cycling is a fun activity which the whole family can enjoy and Bath & North East Somerset Council is pleased to support these events to give everyone the opportunity to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.”
Five local clubs are working alongside the Council and British Cycling to run the 2012 series, with Avonlea Treasure Race Team, Bath Cycling Club, Bath University Cycling Club, Somer Valley Cycling Club and Velo Club Walcot each hosting one round. By working together the local clubs are able to ensure each evening is well supported and the series is a success.
Councillor Roger Symonds (Lib-Dem, Combe Down), Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “The series is part of Bath & North East Somerset Council campaign to make Bath a more cycle-friendly city and by all accounts following last year’s launch we are succeeding.
“Travelling by bike is cost-effective and green; it saves time and, with more and more bike stands and bike-friendly employers, it’s easier than ever.”
