There are few productions that display such inspiring talent and skill than this epic celebration of the music of Carole King and her rise from songwriter for the famous to finding her own way into music history.
An astonishing company of actors/musicians directed by Nikolai Foster and choreographed by Leah Hill stir up a wonderful set of songs and there is not a weak link in this fabulous team.
Lead by Molly Grace–Cutler (Carole King) whose phenomenal talent heads up the cast capturing the musical tone of King with ease whilst ensuring the story is told with sincerity and heart. Tom Milner (Gerry Goffin) is the troubled lyricist whose love for and life with King defines so much of her future success despite the heartbreak he caused.
Seren Sandham – Davies (Cynthia Weil) and Jos Slovick (Barry Mann) are a well-suited couple. Their competitive edge to better King and Goffin is palpable and their relationship develops with humour and compassion for King.
There are many moments of sheer joy with the turn of The Shirelles, The Drifters, The Righteous Brothers. The recreation of the sounds is full of integrity. Unfortunately, the roller-skating Little Eva is not credited in the programme, but the showcase of talent is breathtaking.
The superb set design from Frankie Bradshaw coupled with an inventive lighting design from Ben Cracknell completes a fine display of images which is fully complemented by the era perfect Costume Design (Edd Lindley.)
It is rare to get a production of such flawless skill and passion.
The predominantly young company ensure that the future of theatre, particularly for actor/ musicians is in very safe hands. Get a ticket and relish this opportunity.
