Hundreds of motorists were left in queues of up to 20 minutes along the London Road today after traffic lights at Cleveland Place were replaced.

Contractor Siemens was working to replace all of the traffic signals at the junction of the A4 London Road and Cleveland Place, and also in Bathwick at the junction of Sydney Place and Bathwick Street.

Temporary traffic lights have been put in place, but their timings have meant that long queues have been building inbound, all the way up the A46 bypass beyond the Batheaston Roundabout.

The queuing traffic has been building gradually since the replacement work began earlier this morning.

Traffic between the A36 and Cleveland Place has also remained heavy as the contractors replace further sets of the lights. Delays of around 30 minutes were reported between the A36 and A46.

Travellers were also held up further this afternoon after the card processing system at First Great Western stations failed, leaving customers at Bath Spa station missing trains as they went to find alternative ways to pay.

First Great Western say they problem is national, with a large number of stations across the network affected.
