Piers Gilliver, the world’s number-one wheelchair fencer, and rising skeleton star Jor’dan McIntosh have been named as the latest sporting ambassadors for MJ Church, Team Bath’s new partner.
They join a group of University of Bath-based athletes across a range of sports, including Rio 2016 Olympians Joe Choong (modern pentathlon) and Ben Fletcher (judo), who will bring Team Bath’s partnership with MJ Church alive by attending events and encouraging and inspiring the company’s staff and their families, as well as customers, to take up sport and healthy activities.
In return the Marshfield-based Civil Engineering, Plant, Transport and Waste Management Contractors will offer the athletes a bursary towards their training and competition expenses.
Gilliver has enjoyed two stellar seasons that have seen him win multiple World Cup titles to become the number-one ranked wheelchair fencer.
“It’s great to be selected as an ambassador for MJ Church and the University of Bath,” he said.
“There are a lot of great athletes here and I’m really proud that I get to represent both them and MJ Church.”
McIntosh has been part of the University of Bath-based British Skeleton programme since 2011 after being identified as a potential star of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games through UK Sport’s Power2Podium talent identification scheme.
She underwent surgery in the summer of 2014 after suffering a brain haemorrhage but has made a remarkable recovery and returned to action on the North American Cup circuit this year, recording two top-ten finishes.
“I am delighted to be an ambassador for MJ Church, they are a fantastic company to be on board with,” said McIntosh.
“Their support and backing will make a massive impact on helping me achieve my goals as a full-time athlete.”
McIntosh will be overseeing bobsleigh taster sessions on the University’s unique outdoor push-track when Team Bath hosts the first fun day for MJ Church staff members, families and customers in early September.
The event will see sporting ambassadors help visitors get active across a range of activities at the Sports Training Village.
Nine sporting ambassadors have now been confirmed including Sam Cook (netball), Sydney Gregson (rugby), Dave King (athletics), Jay Lelliott (swimming) and Eden Richardson (tennis).
MJ Church, a dynamic business offering a diverse range of services from skip hire and waste collection to multi million-pound civil engineering contracts, became a partner of Team Bath last month, supporting sport from grassroots level through to high performance.
