The University of Bath women’s tennis team has completed a hat-trick of British Universities titles with a 5-1 victory over Durham in a recent final.

The Bath team had to battle back from a slow start to claim their third title in a row in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) final in Sheffield.

All square at one match each after the two women’s doubles contests, they were then a set down in three of the four singles matches.

But they showed terrific team spirit to go on to win all four of the singles contests to take the title 5-1.

Barry Scollo, Director of Tennis at the University of Bath, paid tribute to the team of Steph Cornish – a final year Economics student who has featured in all three winning BUCS teams – Alex Walker (Sports Performance), Tash Starling (Business Administration) and Amelia Stuart (Psychology).

He said: “The team spirit has been unbelievable all the way through the season and they showed that by turning it round in all of the singles matches.

“I’d also like to thank coach James Andell, who has coached all three of those teams,” he added. “Winning three in a row is a fantastic performance and is a testament to his effort and the commitment and hard work of the players.”

The team final came two weeks after Alex Walker beat Steph Cornish in the women’s singles final at the BUCS Individual Tennis Championships.
