University of Bath Chemical Engineering student and badminton player Angus Pedersen has won a hat-trick of titles at the Finnish International Junior Championships.
Pedersen only dropped three games from all 15 of his matches in Espoo en route to collecting the men’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles titles at the weekend.
“I’ve never won three titles nationally, so to do it at an international standard was amazing,” he said.
This result comes off the back of recently receiving a Trendell Sports Scholarship at the University of Bath, without which he said he wouldn’t have been able to go to Finland to compete.
“It’s my first international I’ve been able to go to in a year, so it’s really satisfying to be able to play in international tournaments again and do well.”
Pedersen took on some of the best junior badminton players in Europe along the way, not dropping a single set along the way with his men’s doubles partner Matthew Widdicombe and his mixed doubles partner, Russian Ekaterina Kut.
His toughest tests came in the singles tournament where he came up against stiff opposition from Portugal and Sweden but still came away as the victor.
“It’s pretty special to not drop a set in the doubles tournament so I guess I just have to work on my singles,” he said.
Coach Pete Bush praised Pedersen, he said: “It’s a fantastic achievement to win an international competition like this.
“Angus has only recently just joined us, so to settle in to a new programme and win at such a high level is great.”
