Children and young people with Special Educational Needs who were inspired by the Special Olympics in Bath can get involved in sport thanks to the Council.

If you would like to meet new friends and play sports in a fun and inclusive environment, they have a new course starting at Bath Sports and Leisure Centre on Monday 16th September.

The Inclusive After School Club runs on Mondays during term time from 4pm-5pm for 10 weeks (costing £40) and provides multi-sport opportunities for young people from 7-18 years old. The club is open to all and welcomes anyone regardless of their ability.

Councillor David Dixon (Lib-Dem, Oldfield), said: “After the fantastic week seeing Bath host the Special Olympics, we have even more reason to celebrate inclusive sport. So we’re excited to kick off the new school year with a chance for young people with Special Educational Needs to get involved with sport. Bath & North East Somerset Council is encouraging children and young people to come along to these inclusive clubs – which are open to all abilities – as we want to give everyone the opportunity to take part in sport and leisure activities, and enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

“Previous activities have included tag rugby, hockey, basketball, football, badminton, adapted cycling and open swimming. We’re always interested to provide new sports so please come along and tell us what you would like to try.”

Highly skilled and professional coaches from Bath Rugby Foundation offer fun and informal sport that can be adapted to ensure everyone feels part of the activity and contributes to the team. The club allows young people to make new friends and develop confidence and skills which benefit their overall independence.

For more information or to book a place, please contact Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Sport & Active Lifestyles Team on 01225 396429 or email [email protected].

The Inclusive After School Club is a partnership initiative involving Bath & North East Somerset Council, Aquaterra, Bath Rugby Foundation, Threeways School, Fosseway School and Bath & North East Somerset Inclusive Sport & Physical Activity Association.
