Loraine Morgan-Brinkhurst MBE has announced her intention to stand as an Independent Parliamentary candidate for Bath in the May general election, after resigning from the Lib Dems.

Loraine, who has been a Liberal Democrat councillor in Bath for more than 20 years, has resigned from the party to stand as an Independent believing that Bath deserves a representative in Parliament that is prepared to put Bath first.

Her decision to stand as an Independent is based largely on her disappointment in the coalition Government and in particular witnessing MP’s toeing the party line rather than acting for the good of the City.

She said: “Voting for me will give Bath residents and businesses a strong voice in Parliament. As an Independent MP I would have the freedom to vote for the policies that will most benefit Bath.

“While I have been a Lib Dem councillor for a long time the decision to leave the party in the end was an easy one as I can’t support a party when I don’t agree with a number of the decisions they have voted to stand behind nationally, in particular fracking which is not right for Bath and the u-turn made on tuition fees.

“As an Independent MP in Parliament I can represent the city without being told how I should vote by a political party.

“This also means I can add my weight to support policies that are right for our city and ensure I am always putting Bath first.”

Loraine was born in Bath and has lived and worked in the City all her life. She is passionate about the City and has devoted 40 years of her life to Bath through her career in the local health service, her charity work and services to Bath & North East Somerset which earned her an MBE in 2010 and from being a local councillor.

She has six children and lives in Bath with her long-term partner John.  She also runs her own event management and promotions consultancy.
