Ben Howlett, the MP for Bath, has asked the Prime Minister in the House of Commons what more MP’s can do to ensure the Government negotiates a comprehensive free trade deal with the European Union.
The Prime Minister yesterday triggered Article 50, beginning the process of Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union.
The Prime Minister announced to the House of Commons: “We are leaving the European Union, but we are not leaving Europe – and we want to remain committed partners and allies to our friends across the continent.
“The United Kingdom wants the European Union to succeed and prosper. Indeed, as a close friend and neighbour, we hope to enjoy a deep and special partnership with the European Union once we leave.”
Speaking in the House of Commons, Ben said: “This is a day that which neither I nor the vast majority of my constituents wanted to see, however, may I commend the Prime Minister for her statement and also for her tone in her letter to President Tusk.
“I fully support the Prime Minister in her objective of securing a comprehensive free trade agreement on goods and services with the EU – and let’s be clear no deal would be a bad deal – but what more can this house do to help her deliver her aims in the interests of both Britain and the European Union?”
Responding, Theresa May said: “I think the task that this house will have of putting through necessary legislation of the Great Repeal Bill and other legislation, will of course be an important part of the process of being able to deliver on the deal that we need at the end of this negotiation.
“I have every confidence that members from all parts of the House and from all views and sides of the argument in the past will come together and will ensure that we will work together to get the best possible deal.”
Upon leaving the Chamber Ben said: “The Prime Minister has been clear that she is seeking a comprehensive free trade agreement with the European Union and I very much hope this is the outcome. We must now come together as one-nation and ensure that this ambition becomes a reality.
“I will be working closely with the Government to make sure the views of Bath residents are championed every step of the way.”
