A timescale for the much-needed expansion of Newbridge Park & Ride has been unveiled by the Council following the planning consent granted in November 2013.
The key milestones of the timeline are:
- February 2014; works will start to enable a new entrance into the car park extension to be formed within the site;
- April; a contractors compound will be set-up and initial site clearance commenced to accommodation the proposed expansion – a small number of spaces will be required for the compound;
- April; work will start on a reconfigured junction with the Newbridge Road incorporating traffic signals, and improvements to turning movements;
- May; work to the car park extension to increase the capacity inside the site starts in earnest;
- October; the project will be completed with nearly 250 extra spaces taking capacity from 450 to 698 with a covered waiting area, public toilets and cycle storage.
Councillor Paul Crossley (Lib-Dem, Southdown), Leader of Council, said: “Now that the Council has planning consent, we are moving as quickly as possible to expand Newbridge Park & Ride well in time for Christmas 2014. As everyone knows, space is currently extremely limited meaning that people who cannot park then drive into the city centre. This creates extra congestion as they search for a space in the city.
“Business leaders will be delighted that work is soon to get underway. They want their staff, clients and customers to have quick, convenient access into the city. Along with the expansion of Lansdown and Odd Down Park & Rides, the overall capacity of our facilities will have increased from 1,990 spaces to 2,860 once Newbridge is finished.”
