New warning signs are to be installed on the new bus gate on Dorchester Street, after it was revealed that around 60 people an hour were being fined after travelling along the road.
The new signage will be put in place to help reduce the number of people who are still using Dorchester Street during the bus gate hours.
Figures from the Council have revealed that over 6,500 fixed penalty notices were issued during the last two weeks of March.
Although the current signage complies with rules set out by the Traffic Penalty Tribunal, the Council have said they will make the bus gate area clearer to motorists.
The additional signage is expected to be installed sometime this week.
The bus gate, which has now been in force for four months, is part of a six month trial by the Council in an attempt to reduce traffic around the bus station and to make the area safer for pedestrians.
Conservative councillors criticised the bus gate when it was implemented, claiming it would displace a large amount of traffic onto nearby roads.
The bus gate is being enforced between 10am and 6pm each day, running eastbound along Dorchester Street.
