An initiative being undertaken by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission has released figures which show that Bath contains over 500 Commonwealth war graves from both World Wars.
Following a request from the War Heritage All Party Parliamentary Group, the GWGC, in association with In From the Cold Project, has initiated a project to identify those cemeteries which contain war graves.
The CWGC honours the 1,700,000 men and women of the forces of the Commonwealth who died in the two world wars. In addition, it also cares for cemeteries and memorials in 23,000 locations and 153 countries.
In the Bath constituency, there are eleven locations which contain Commonwealth war graves with Bathwick Cemetery having the highest number.
The other locations are Haycombe Cemetery, Locksbrook Cemetery, St. James’s Cemetery, St. Michael’s Cemetery, Twerton Cemetery, Bath Abbey Cemetery, Bath Roman Catholic Cemetery, Bathwich (St. Mary the Virgin) Churchyard, Landsdown Burial Ground and the Worsborough Dale (St. Thomas) Churchyard.
Commenting, Bath MP Don Foster, said: “The work done by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and In From the Cold Project is truly commendable.
“We are all aware of the great sacrifices our Armed Service personnel make and the fantastic work they do to keep us safe.
“This Sunday is a time for us to remember those who have served this country and I am sure the people of Bath will be interested to know the places they can go to pay their respects.”
