Plans have been submitted by the Council to install a 3G artificial grass astro pitch on its Odd Down Playing Fields.

The plans could see a Football Association-compliant pitch being constructed, along with lighting and additional car parking, as part of the continued upgrading of the Odd Down playing fields.

The Council has applied for funding from the Football Association – who would be responsible for contracting a firm to begin constructing the 3G “Astro Pitch” in early 2014, with a proposed completion around autumn next year, subject to planning approval being agreed.

Councillor David Dixon (Lib-Dem, Oldfield), Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “We hope that the planned 3G pitch will prove as popular as the Odd Down Cycle Circuit at the site as Bath & North East Somerset Council is keen to give everyone the chance to get active and enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

“Our aim is to upgrade the facilities at Odd Down as part of our commitment towards increasing public participation and improving services. We’re encouraging local people and sporting groups to take a look at the planning application and submit their comments to help us ensure that we can offer something for everybody, from children and families to the more competitive sports enthusiast.”

The planning application can be viewed and commented on via the Council’s website.

The Council’s planning application includes a provision to increase the size of the pitch from 106×70 metres to 120×80 metres – subject to available funding from the Football Association (FA) and the Rugby Football Union (RFU) – which would make it compliant with both FA and RFU regulations.

And when will the great unwashed have access to it? The cycle track is only available for about an hour per week…

This will be a great asset to the community since the University closed it Sports Village facilities to the general public last year. I do hope it goes ahead.
