In a bid to improve diet-related health and wellbeing, environmental sustainability and the local food economy, the Council has developed a new three year Local Food Strategy.
This sets out a series of action to improve the production, provision and consumption of more healthy, sustainable and locally-sourced food.
Bath and North East Somerset is already a member of the sustainable food cities network, holds Fairtrade accreditation for the communities of Saltford and Keynsham and is currently renewing Fairtrade accreditation for Bath.
“The launch of the strategy demonstrates on-going commitment to improving access to good food for members of the local community,” said Council Leader, Cllr Paul Crossley.
“We want to encourage a wider range of work places and community organisations to serve both Fairtrade and local products and get involved in the Fairtrade campaign, as well as increase the number of schools either attaining, or aiming to attain, Fairtrade Schools status.”
The strategy was launched at an event at Farrington’s Farm Shop in Farrington Gurney on 10th March, attended by representatives from local businesses, producers, community groups and charities all of whom contributed to action planning for the strategy.
Food organizations which are leading the way in positive change – including the Community Farm, members of Linking Environment and Farming , FareShare South West , Transition Bath, Bath Spa University, Keynsham Food Bank and Sirona Care and Health – were also in attendance, sharing their knowledge and providing examples of how the Bath and North East Somerset Local Food strategy can be put into action.
All interested individuals, businesses and organizations are urged to join the online Sustainability Network Food Group http://www.sustainabilitynetwork.co.uk/group/localfood.
